Abstract

This article examines the tension between two understandings of desire, with fundamental implications for liturgical practice, through a comparative analysis grounded in a literature review. James K. A. Smith argues that liturgy functions as a pedagogy of desire, working through the body, habits, and social imagination to shape faith in a directed manner. Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, by contrast, understand desire as a productive force that is always in motion and cannot be unilaterally stabilized by any ritual structure. Rather than resolving this tension, this article proposes the concept of dynamic liturgy as a model that preserves formative structure as a theological foundation while simultaneously creating space for spontaneity, doubt, and authentic faith-seeking, particularly within academic campus communities. In a postmodern context marked by the erosion of singular authority and the growing pursuit of personal spirituality, dynamic liturgy emerges as a pastorally relevant response without relinquishing its communal and theological orientation
