Abstract

This article examines biblical reading practices in the spiritual formation of theology students at the State Christian Institute (IAKN) Ta-rutung, using the conceptual framework of lectio divina as a transformative space for encounter with the Word. Contemporary theological education frequently suffers from a fragmentation between critical-historical exegesis and formative spiritual discipline: students master interpretive methods yet lack contemplation. By placing Guigo II’s monastic ladder, M. Robert Mulholland Jr.’s theology of spiritual formation, Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of appropriation, and Parker J. Palmer’s pedagogical epistemology in dialogue, this article argues that lectio divina can be rehabilitated as an ecumenical, cross-traditional discipline that unites head, heart, and hands. The research employs Richard R. Osmer’s qualitative, practical-theological approach with hermeneutic-phenomenological analysis. The IAKN Tarutung context, rooted in Batak Lutheran-Reformed ecclesiology, is read as a con-textual laboratory that promises the integration of the contemplative tradition with the communal marhata habitus. The article contributes a Lectio Communalis Batakiana pedagogical model as a formative reconstruction for contemporary Indonesian theological education.
